Nine Centuries of History
Just a short trip from Frankfurt, surrounded by the vineyards of the Rheingau, lies Eberbach Monastery – one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval monastic complexes.
Founded by Cistercian monks in 1136, its Romanesque and Gothic halls, cloisters and historic wine cellars tell almost 900 years of history. Film lovers may recognise Eberbach as a principal location for The Name of the Rose, starring Sean Connery and Christian Slater.
Wine has been part of Eberbach’s story from the beginning. The monks cultivated vineyards here almost 900 years ago, establishing a tradition continued today by the Hessian State Wineries Eberbach Monastery. Discover it on a Wine Walk or in the Vinothek, featuring wines from the historic vineyards.
